We have all came across the term "Consulting", but what does it entail and when do you need it?

In this article, we explore the world of Consulting and the Top 14 Reasons why Organisations engage Consultancies.

Consulting, Explained:

According to the Cambridge dictionary, the term Consulting is the "activity or business of giving expert advice about a particular subject / field".

Businesses can seek consulting services across a wide range of disciplines, including Management Consulting, Business, Marketing, Financial, Product Development, and Corporate Strategy.

To elaborate on the different levels and functions of consultancy work, we employed an analogy. Think of consultancy as a mode of transport that can take you to greater heights, from your starting point to your desired destination. At 12,000 feet, the view is broader and focused on the fundamentals, while at the higher levels of 35,000 and 45,000 feet, the view is more specific and strategic, as shown below:

Top 14 reasons why organisations engage Consultancies:

1) They offer expertise and specialised skills

By engaging a consultancy, you gain access to a group of professionals with highly specialised skills and knowledge that you need but may not have in-house. Hiring a consultancy may therefore be a wise and efficient investment of resources, as opposed to spending time and effort attempting to solve an issue on your own.

2) They have a wealth of experience and a broader, deeper knowledge

Consultancies work with multiple clients and have a broader, deeper knowledge about relevant industry trends, technologies and processes. Their collective experience can thus be relied upon to drive desired project outcomes and goals.

3) They possess a proven track record of successes

Consultancies have a proven track record of successes that are built from having extensive project experience and exposure. This reduces the risk of failure and provides clients added confidence on the fulfillment of the project deliverables.

4) They help supplement your short-term manpower needs / time-sensitive projects
Resource planning can be challenging as new opportunities or staff departures can bring about a shift in an organisation's resource equilibrium.

Engaging consultancies are thus helpful in such situations or when time is of the essence as consultants are able to plug into the projects and get up to speed in projects, filling out any resource or knowledge gaps.

This eliminates the need for additional manpower and in-house skill development, or if more time is needed for recruitment.

5) They help you focus on your core business
By partnering with a consultancy, you bring on board experienced professionals who can help you tackle your project with efficiency and expertise.

Your team can then keep their eye on the bigger picture and focus on their existing tasks.. The valuable time and resources saved can then be channeled into the most critical aspects of the business such as: business development, driving growth and nurturing key relationships to stay ahead of the competition.

6) You can accelerate development of your projects / initiative

With a consultancy handling the details, you can accelerate development of your project and possibly increase your team's capacity to run more more projects. Businesses also engage a consultancy sometimes to fast-track or progress a project/initiative that is stalling or facing stagnancy.

7) They help you save costs
Consultancies provide a cost-effective solution for your short-term projects and needs as hiring specialists can be expensive and the company may not have enough work to retain them full-time after project completion.

Many executives find that engaging a consultancy would be a more cost-efficient option compared to hiring full-time staff, as they do not have to pay benefits. The financial and legal obligations also end once the project is finished.

Additionally, as consultants are experts in their field, they are able to advise you on the right spend and help you save cost. They act as fiduciaries and are adept in identifying areas where costs may be reduced without compromising quality or results.

8) They act as the liaison and are the driving force of your project

Consultants act as the liaison of your project and are like the conduit or connecting bridge, helping you manage the many stakeholders and deliverables of your project.

This could include stakeholders from the vendors (interior designers, architects, general contractors, system integrators, manufacturers, M&E, lighting, security vendors) and internal teams (e.g. corporate / real estate / HR / IT / security / project teams etc) and consist of project managers, interior designers, architects, general contractors, system integrators,

Consultants work closely with the teams to navigate any challenges, helping you align stakeholder interests and ensuring the successful execution and delivery of your project.

9) They are expert problem solvers
Consultancies are experienced in identifying and resolving problems as they are exposed to different projects and may have worked on a similar problem before.

Their proven track record enables them to approach any challenges with confidence, providing clients assurance that their project are well taken care of.

10) They do not offer a one-size-fits-all solution

Consultancies do not offer a one-size-fits-all solution as they treat each project as a unique one. They strive to understand each client's business goals and tailor their advice accordingly to address specific needs.

11) They offer a safe zone and act as a catalyst for change

Clients sometimes bring in consultancies to execute "dirty" or controversial tasks such as restructurings and terminations which may not be welcomed by employees.

The consultants are thus the perfect person to handle such unpleasant tasks. As a separate, external party from the organisation, they do not need to worry or be influenced by issues that may elicit politics, emotions and animosity internally, which can get in the way when an organisation is trying to institute change.

12) They are objective and can challenge or validate your plans or ideas

Consultancies are to remain unbiased and maintain objectivity. Their vendor-neutral and independent approach enable them to challenge established processes or help validate plans and ideas to enhance the efficiency and quality of the project.

13) They are a new set of eyes that can bring fresh insights and new ideas

Consultancies are hired by businesses to inject new ideas and innovative solutions to drive growth and enhance current processes.

They bring a fresh perspective to the table, which internal staff may miss due to their close involvement in the company's operations.

The diversity of clients and projects that consultants have been exposed to provides them with the expertise to recommend the right solutions / technologies and pinpoint opportunities for improvement.

This makes them valuable partners for companies looking to transform and optimise their operations in today's rapidly changing business environment.

14) They can provide access to key business connections and resources

Consultancies are well-connected and have an extensive network of connections, built through their frequent interactions with various stakeholders in the course of their work.

Having a network of trusted connections is valuable to any businesses as it can be leveraged upon to uncover new opportunities and key business connections.

It can also provide access to key relationships, resources, expertise and support. This can be advantageous as it can help businesses remain competitive and stay ahead of the curve.

Consultancy services offer significant value to businesses — from cost savings and risk mitigation to accelerated delivery and informed decision-making. Yet, some organisations remain hesitant to engage external experts. These concerns are valid, but often stem from partnering with the wrong consultants.
